Figure 2: Longitudinal torus asymmetries at four different times. Vertical slices were taken at the places indicated by the arrows, and each limb of the torus was fit with a Gaussian. The ratio of the areas is shown below the arrows in each image; it varies from near unity to over six. The separation of the peaks implies a radial distance of ~5.2 RJ (tilted dipole field model) for the limbs, which agrees with the generally accepted value for the "cold" torus. The bottom image shows a more "closed" torus because of different viewing geometry in 1999. [PostScript version available here.]
